What makes a presentation remarkable? In this two-hour session, we want to share ideas about best practices among current and perspective OLLI-UA Study Group Leaders (SGLs) with the objective of lifting the presentation quality of our course offerings.

When making a presentation, all educators are confronted with a critical challenge: what is the best method to educate and motivate an audience while entertaining them sufficiently to keep their attention and concentration. For OLLI, a variant is how to accomplish these objectives with a self-motivated adult audience eager to widen intellectual horizons.

Many of you, as SGLs, have a wide knowledge and experience on how to present effectively while others are occasional presenters of interesting topics or simply beginners in the art and science of lecturing. There is much we can learn from each other. OLLI seeks to use the “wisdom of the crowds” to enhance the quality of presentations offered. To accomplish this objective for this session we will use an interactive group-breakouts format allowing for the effective exchange of techniques and recommendations on how to make a presentation that carries information, induces the participant to search more knowledge on the topic, while keeping their attention throughout the time allotted. We will regroup intermittently to share the collective wisdom and draw conclusions useful to all. Dr. José Santiago will facilitate this two-hour workshop using a template of evidence-based lecturing science to start the dialogue.

This session is for SGLs and prospective SGLs only. Depending on demand, we hope to offer additional workshops.

Facilitated by: José Santiago

José Santiago MD was a professor at the University of Arizona Medical School and has been a consultant to large healthcare organizations.
